Purpose & Program

Wonder Awhile Nursery School is sponsored by the Winthrop United Methodist Church. We are a self-supporting, not-for-profit organization that has served the greater Winthrop area since February 1964. Our purpose is to provide a well-designed, developmentally appropriate environment that addresses each child’s social, physical, emotional, and intellectual growth. The nursery school is a nurturing setting that provides for the children’s development, creativity, and imagination. At Wonder Awhile, one will find a child’s world of play, wonder, and exploration where teachers and peers are encouraged and supported, with many opportunities available to:

• play and interact with children of similar ages with various needs and abilities; develop new skills; listen and follow simple directions; assume responsibility, and self-initiate play choices, use discovery, sense of curiosity. and wonder to learn about their world

• experiment with clay, playdoh, various textures, to enrich sensory awareness

• paint, glue, markers, pencils, crayons, scissors, and other art media to strengthen fine motor skills

• discover the joys in the natural world through science and nature; sharpen the five senses; create with blocks and other building materials to enhance science and math experiences

• develop confidence and skills in speaking, build vocabulary, and enjoy and appreciate good books to increase communication skills

• become acquainted with colors, numbers, letters, sizes, shapes, and other concepts to become prepared for public school

• enjoy a variety of musical experiences through singing, rhythm instruments, movements, and listening to music to explore creativity,

• develop muscular strength through physical activities and games both inside and outdoors to assist with coordination

• explore the community, including meeting various community workers, family relationships, field trips, guest visitors to become more aware of their surroundings

• practice good health and safety habits that provide lifelong health

• play, laugh, learn and have fun as a lifelong learner while remembering
